The UBC Fraser Health–Greater Vancouver Psychiatry Residency Program offers a comprehensive and high-quality academic curriculum designed to enhance clinical knowledge, decision-making, and professional development. Educational activities are aligned with residents’ stages of training, support the development of CanMEDS competencies, and help prepare residents for the Royal College certification examinations. Academic courses, seminars, and rounds are delivered by dedicated clinical and academic faculty, with content building progressively throughout residency to support continued growth and expertise.

All UBC Psychiatry residency tracks, including Fraser Health–Greater Vancouver, participate in a fully integrated academic curriculum. Residents in PGY2 through PGY5 attend a protected full-day academic program each Thursday, delivered virtually and shared across all UBC Psychiatry sites. Residents are excused from their clinical duties to participate in seminars covering the full breadth of psychiatry, with content designed to meet the standards and objectives of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

The PGY2 curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to General Adult Psychiatry and is preceded by a two-month seminar series focused on Emergency Psychiatry. The PGY3 and PGY4 curricula build on this foundation through in-depth study of common psychiatric disorders and specialized areas, including child and adolescent psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, and consultation-liaison psychiatry.

Educational activities are fully integrated across all UBC Psychiatry residency sites through videoconferencing, allowing residents to participate in academic events and teaching sessions regardless of location. Dedicated videoconferencing facilities support seamless collaboration and learning across the distributed program.

Within the Fraser Health–Greater Vancouver program, residents are actively involved in the teaching and supervision of medical students and junior trainees through clinical teaching, case conferences, on-call experiences, and inpatient team leadership. As residents progress through training, they are provided with increasing autonomy and opportunities to further develop their teaching, teamwork, and leadership skills.
