Fraser Health’s Reproductive Mental Health Program provides specialized psychiatric assessment and treatment for individuals experiencing mental health concerns related to the reproductive years, including pregnancy and the postpartum period, infertility, and reproductive hormone-related conditions. Services support patients with a range of conditions, including depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, psychotic illnesses, Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD), and mental health concerns associated with fertility challenges and infertility, with a focus on optimizing mental health and overall well-being.
The program offers psychiatric consultation, psychiatric care during pregnancy, and ongoing support following delivery. Care is tailored to individual needs and may include psychiatric assessment, medication consultation and management, individual counselling, group therapy, and collaborative care planning. The service works closely with family physicians, obstetric providers, midwives, pediatric providers, and community mental health teams to ensure coordinated and comprehensive care.
Residents and learners participating in Reproductive Psychiatry gain experience in the assessment and management of psychiatric disorders during the perinatal period, including the complex balance between maternal mental health, fetal and infant well-being, and psychopharmacologic treatment decisions. Clinical exposure includes the evaluation and treatment of mood, anxiety, bipolar, and psychotic disorders during pregnancy and postpartum, as well as consultation regarding psychiatric medication use and mental health concerns associated with reproductive transitions.
